The last match of the series was played in Birmingham last year and Shastri wanted Kohli to captain it as well. In an ESPN-Cricinfo interview, Shastri mentioned that test and told his mind that Virat Kohli should have been given the captaincy when Rohit Sharma was ruled out of that test.

Jasprit Bumrah took command of the team in that test in Birmingham and England won that test and equalized 2-2 in the series. The former Indian coach said that if he had been the coach, he would have made this proposal to Kohli. Although Shastri admitted that he did not know whether Rahul Dravid did this or not.

There was a lot of controversy in December 2021 and January 2022 regarding Kohli’s removal from the captaincy. He was removed from the ODI captaincy just before the tour of South Africa, while after the defeat in the Test series, he himself gave up the captaincy of the last format.

Coach Shastri, who led the Indian team to two Test series wins in Australia during his tenure, said that if a situation arises again where a crucial match is at stake and Rohit Sharma is not available, he would choose Virat Kohli as the captain.
