New Delhi: There has been a stir ever since the country’s veteran wrestlers opened a front accusing the Indian Wrestling Federation President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of sexual exploitation. Apart from Olympic medalists Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik, World Championship medalist Vinesh Phogat is adamant on demanding Brij Bhushan’s arrest. Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Commission has issued notices to a total of 15 federations apart from the Sports Ministry, SAI, WFI and BCCI. These federations do not have an internal complaints committee as per the law.

Due to the performance of the wrestlers, the eyes are mainly focused on the Wrestling Federation, but it has also exposed the shortcomings of different sports federations running in the country. There is a big drawback in this of the Internal Complaints Committee i.e. Internal Complaints Committee. Under the Prevention of Sexual Exploitation Act in 2013, it is mandatory to have ICC in all kinds of organizations, companies and offices. Failure to do so would be considered a violation of the law.

Notice to Sports Ministry and Associations

Talking about the associations and boards that look after the work of different sports in India, the situation here is not very good. Recently, in an investigation by the English newspaper Indian Express, it was revealed that in 15 out of 30 sports federations, either the ICC does not exist or the rules have not been fully followed even in those that exist.

Now the NHRC has taken cognizance of this report and has issued notices to these 16 federations and summoned their answers. Apart from the wrestling federation, it includes federations like badminton, volleyball, table tennis, archery, basketball. Not only these sports associations, but the notice of NHRC has also gone to the Union Sports Ministry, Sports Authority of India (SAI).

BCCI also under wraps

Not only this, this notice has also been sent to the Board of Control for Cricket in India i.e. BCCI, which runs cricket in the country, due to which BCCI has also come under the scanner. The commission has asked all of them to reply to the notice within the next 4 weeks. Along with this, it has also been asked that what is the position of ICC in these associations and what steps have been taken to deal with such cases.

Talking about BCCI, a few years back former CEO of the board Rahul Johri was also accused of sexual harassment. However, then a three-member inquiry committee was formed by the BCCI and he was acquitted of these charges.
